Update: Declaration of Independence

We have lost the original vision embodied in the Declaration of Independence, and stand in need of an update, keeping the original spirit but taking into account the identity of our own King George.

The unanimous declaration of the people of the United States of America: When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for a people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with one another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the right to a full and equal voice in the affairs of government, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them on this course. 

 

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, as free as possible from the intrusions of government, –That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men and Women, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,–That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, that to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism to the power of wealth and privilege, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. Such has been the patient sufferance of the people, and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter the direction of their Government if not the System itself. The history of the incumbent President is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having the direct object of establishing an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let the Facts be submitted to a candid world. 

 

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good, through the profligate use of Signing Statements in which he has declared his opposition to laws passed by the Congress and his intent of allowing them to languish without enforcement. 

 

He has forbidden his appointees and aides to testify before the Congress in response to subpoena, under the guise of “Executive privilege.”

 

He has cruelly neglected the health of a large part of the population, refusing to let Medicare officials negotiate with pharmaceutical companies so as to obtain the most favorable prices, and blocked the importation of less expensive drugs from Canada, and has endeavored to forestall change in the Health Care Delivery System by refusing to limit the power of Insurance Companies. 

 

He has attempted to “privatize” the Social Security system and subject it to the uncertainty of financial markets, thus threatening the pensions of millions. 

 

He has, in grievous disregard of qualifications, appointed people to office manifestly unsuited for their positions.

 

He has refused to adequately protect the harbors and the borders of the country from the incursions of both illegal immigrants and terrorists and the introduction of weapons of mass destruction in cargo containers. 

 

He has obstructed the administration of Justice by appointing Judges with narrowly-defined Philosophies not suited to a large and diverse population, and made the appointment of Judges dependent on his “litmus tests” regarding their views on such matters as abortion, even through the matters seldom come up in their courts. 

 

He has recklessly used allegations of Treason and Hating America and Siding With the Terrorists against those who might disagree with the direction and ethical conduct of policy in his Administration, no matter how honorable and devoted they might be, and has heaped scorn and ridicule on those who question his policies.

 

He has combined with others, in an International Monetary Fund, a World Bank, and a World Trade Organization, to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our Constitution.

 

He has refused to levy taxes to pay for the expenditures of the Government, including the War in Iraq, and has placed the nation in a state of fiscal peril.

 

He has unilaterally declared invalid the provisions of the Geneva Convention, has “rendered” those captured in combat to the custody of other nations known to engage in the practice of torture, there to be tortured, and has denied them the most basic of legal rights provided in the Constitution, requiring their trial in secret Military Tribunals.

 

He has authorized the surveillance of telephone and other forms of communication, and of library records, with no regard for the Constitutional rights of citizens and with no regard for the procedures call for in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

 

He has sought to deny the protection of the Constitution to certain citizens based solely on their sexual preference  and hs used so-called “wedge issues” in a scurrilous and concerted attempt to divide the nation and insure his re-election and that of others in his Party.

 

He has intentionally blurred the lines between Church and State, contrary to the intentions of the Founders, under the rubric of “faith-based initiatives” and criteria for the selection of Supreme Court judges.  

 

He has engaged in or otherwise supported election manipulation and fraud in the 2000 and 2004 elections, insuring his election and re-election.

 

He has opened the White House to the influence of Lobbyists for all the major Industries and Economic Interests, in exchange for their financial support.

 

He has resorted to Secret Meetings with officials in the Private Sector to fashion energy policies, without disclosing the nature of the agreements reached or the persons involved.

 

He has adopted a policy of Pre-emptive War, seeking to control the nations of the world by an American Empire involving the militarization of space, the dispatch of mercenaries, and the permanent encampment of American forces around the world. 

 

He has adopted the philosophy of “the Noble Lie” according to which the truth may be withheld from the people if, in the judgment of the Rulers, the people are better served by not knowing the truth and, like the residents of Plato’s Cave, glimpse only the Shadows of Reality.

 

He has instituted the events of 9-11 to institute a Reign of Terror in America, justifying any conceivable measure to protect the nation against all enemies, real or imagined.

 

In every stage of these Oppressions, we have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms, in Public Opinion Polls and letters to the Editor and Emails and Rallies throughout the land and on the Mall between the Capitol Building and the Lincoln memorial. Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury and stubborn repetition of discredited slogans and failed policies. A President whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant is unfit to be the ruler of a Free People.

 

We, therefore, the People of the United States of America, appealing to the conscience of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do solemnly publish and declare, That these United States and the People within are, and of right ought to be Free and Independent; that they are absolved from all Allegiance to the administration of George W. Bush, and that all connections between them and the Administration is and ought to be totally dissolved, and that as Free and Independent People, they have full power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent People may of right do.

 

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor. 

 

Why voting Obama feels so right…

or    Who would Pres. Thomas Jefferson have voted for?  The choices?    Continuing the administration as is—-> not even negotiable. That has not represented what he wanted as a healthy governing agency, a true democracy from day one.   The republican choice (what is going on there?) is suffering from such pain from his traumatic treatment as a prisoner that he has no desire to  NOT GO   TO   WAR,  to not get even,  he would willingly sacrifice our young, our patriotic to …what ends??do we know?       A 100 year war, can u imagine that?  

 We hate it that we can’t vote for the flip change –the female candidate.  After all Obama is only a 1/4  change as he is half white, so he is still a half white male,  so a vote for him is only a radical one quarter difference in all these many presidents.  Of course that is the long term view, the short term is he is radically different from present admin.  in that he is brilliant and can coherently make his views known and understood and if given the chance may flip the view of our amazing country back to one with some respect. No, we cannot vote for HER,   she did not intervene when her husband was the president and rather than abolishing corporate welfare and reforming the system that was not good for welfare recipients but could have been upgraded to include education, child care,  parenting skills, nutrition, drug abuse awareness, etc. —-n o      he forced many to endure further humiliations and prejudice and let us get real—we do live in a complicated and unfriendly {towards the ~~different~~poor or sickly or those who have needs}  society.  Where were her judgments, her influence? 

 As feminists {my wife Kasha and I write this one together} it is sad to see so many others wanting to vote for the female just due to her sex.  You must not be feminists, cause that is what sexism is folks,   being treated a certain way due to one’s sex.   It is more complicated than that,  hence  http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/feminism-topics/ 
for us the issue is to not be given different treatment, options, opportunities, respect, etc.  due to one’s gender or sexual identity.  Thank Goddess for Obama & his wife,  we just bet they are true feminists; and if for some reason not dedicated to that path yet, we believe they would be open to learning and considering why they would want to be. 

James is a Woodfin Water Board trustee, a natural resource and national treasure. We learned that the board back in 2003 had become exclusive, secretive and environmentally unfriendly.  To secure the amazing watershed we ran, he for the office, me the campaign.  That team won. {a story worth hearing} Hence we have our own watershed in the mountains of North Carolina. It is clear Obama would be the most environmentally sensitive of the candidates and would offer a sympathetic ear to whatever is needed to keep our streams and rivers pure and clean.  

April Fools Bush or Us? we are still occupying another country…

 New Strategies and Methods for protesting the war are required.  But let’s back up a little first. When you don’t get the truth–about the war in Iraq, or anything else from the so-called corporate media–that’s depressing. But when you do get the truth–that’s depressing too. It’s depressing what people will do to stay in power, to further their interests, reward their friends and supporters, etc.  A couple of recent examples from Mother Jones (Mar-Apr 08). One article entitled “Department of Pre-Crime” about anti-terrorist legislation (Patriot Act and others), based on providing “material support” for organizations designated as terrorist.

 

Sounds innocent enough until you find out you can be arrested and tried for even trying to provide material support (anything of value, not matter what purpose you have in mind) to such an organization. And you don’t have to be engaged in an actual conspiracy with a real organization. It’s enough to express sympathy with the “world-wide jihadist conspiracy.” Or to be sucked into an FBI sting operation and you have expressed some gripes with the way things are going in this country. Kiss your sweetheart  and your mom goodbye. It’s pretty depressing. Or take another article from the same issue: “Blackwater’s World of Warcraft.” There’s lots to be depressed about when you’re reading about Blackwater. But there’s something new (to me anyhow) in this piece. Turns out Blackwater works with sub-contractors in third-world countries (some of which are Blackwater subsidiaries) to recruit their mercenaries. Salvador, Chile, Colombia, African countries. So the Blackwater mercenaries are signed up in those countries–putting the contracts outside the jurisdiction of US laws and courts.  But that’s not all. We’re moving closer to having our wars fought by the citizens of other countries. True mercenaries. Not just Americans signing up as professionals, attracted by the pay and benefits. 

Okay, so what do we do? Jefferson said we need “a little rebellion” every twenty years or so to refresh the tree of liberty. But those words haven’t yet inspired anybody to do anything, certainly not any rebelling. One reason is we think we can always make real changes through the electoral process if we want to. There’s no need for Jefferson”s little rebellions.  But did you ever notice how little is actually changed this way–by going to the polls and voting? Nothing wrong with voting. It’s just not enough.

 Money still rules, as it has from the beginning. Anyhow, the idea of an old-fashioned rebellion is sort of suicidal in this age of high-tech armies and police. Little bands of rebels in the mountains, like Che Guereva’s troops, sounds romantic but they’d face formidable odds.What do do? The military-industrial complex seems to have partisans in both parties as they now stand. And there doesn’t seem to be an end to the wars ostensibly fought in the name of “national security.”  There’s nobody on the horizon capable of seriously harming us, but we still insist we need missile-defense systems and over 700 military bases around the world.The peace movement, including Veterans For Peace and Iraq Veterans Against the War, could use some new allies and some new methods of countering the imperial state.  Veterans For Peace is against militarism–the over-reliance on military force in the conduct of foreign policy, including the furtherance of an American empire.

We and others of like mind are suspicious (to say the least) of the military-industrial complex that Eisenhower warned us about. But the military-industrial complex has a lot of opposition these days. Environmental groups. Global warming groups. Conservation groups. Education groups. Just to name a few. The peace movement need not continue on its lonely way. There’s a whole world of friends out there. Noam Chomsky, Jon Stewart… We just need to band together. If wars aren’t fought to further the interests of industrial groups (through the use of military force), then why are they fought? The answer, of course, is that is precisely why they are fought. And if the industrial establishment is the enemy of the environment (is that a stretch?), why not create alliances with peace groups. Same opponent.We’re not talking about destroying the system. Only changing it sufficiently to save the planet and get us out of the empire business. To change it though, it may not be enough to just go to the polls and vote. We’re always analyzing why fewer and fewer people vote. The truth is, people are just cynical, turned off by the whole process. They don’t see any substantial results. Something else is needed. We made Veterans Voices at wpmv.org an alternative radio station using our public airways to get out the anti-militarism voices. Just had 2 great interviews with Noam Chomsky but we all know even learning about the few alternative choices where we may hear the revealing truth is tricky; time consuming, etc. Do we want small groups challenging the system in various ways? Blockages of normal commercial transactions which at this point are questionably illegal or falling into the usury category? Walking to work? Sick-ins? Electronic populism, using the collective intelligence of the people linked by computer systems to make public decisions? What do you think? We don’t seem to be getting anywhere now. What have we got to lose by trying something new. Let’s here from you.

Chapter 1 
Book Woman: A Foreword
         It was later that I discovered the Dunning novel, a Janeway mystery. The Bookwoman’s Last Fling.  Aside from the details—the Bookwoman was rich and had been murdered and owned a very valuable collection of jewelry—it seemed an appropriate thing to discover, if only to remind me of the  coverlet. 

         The coverlet was a gift from her sister Marg. Woven. Soft unbleached cotton. Bright colors, maroon and ochre and deep blue. Fringed.  “Book Woman” in large letters at the top and small letters at the bottom. The figure of Book Woman herself was seated in the center, wild hair, dark red, shooting out in all directions, holding a diary. Behind her were bookcases, with a few books leaning against each other on the shelves.  

         Book Woman. Rosemary was a book woman, and the title of the Janeway mystery and the rediscovery of the coverlet brought the memory back to life. She loved mysteries also. Agatha Christie and Jesephine Tey. Death Comes to Book Woman would have been a good Christie-like title for her life.                 

In The Charlotte Observer, Dannye Romine wrote about the bookstore the day before it opened on March 16, 1983: If you grew up around an aunt who clamps books to her upright Hoover so she can read as she vacuums, chances are, one way or another, you’ll become hooked on books. 

Chicago native Rosemary Latimore, whose Poplar Street Books opens Wednesday in two rooms of her white Victorian house at 10th and Poplar streets in Fourth Ward, has loved and accumulated books since she can remember. As a child, “Anna of Green Gables,” “Girl of the Limberlost,” all the Nancy Drews, “Pollyana,” the Bobbsey Twins series. Later, all the books on Watergate, books on American Utopies, local histories and always American novels.
